UK to tighten rules for online gambling operators

May 15th, 2009

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe has announced that foreign gambling companies who advertise in the UK will face new demands. The fast changing regulations in Europe as well as the technological advances in the industry makes the UK Government to look at a system to make it more fair and level between UK businesses and their foreign competition.

UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport, who is working with the Gambling Commission, is looking at a couple of problems, one of the problems is collecting contribution from foreign online casino gambling companies, from costs of regulation to treatment of problem gambling. Also the Department will look at working mechanics in order to ensure consumer protection continues to be uphold. Sutcliffe had this to say: “Technology has evolved at an incredible pace and online gambling has changed significantly since the Gambling Act was passed. Now is the right time to take stock of developments in Europe and elsewhere to make sure our regulatory system is as fair and robust as possible for all operators able to advertise their services in the UK. It is in its early days so I do not want to pre-empt the outcome of this work, but getting a fairer deal for UK casino operators and ensuring continued consumer protection are my top priorities
