Robber steals $1.5 million worth of casino chips

December 15th, 2010

Last Tuesday, an armed robber got away after a robbery on the luxurious Bellagio hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip, where he has stolen casino chips worth more than 1.5 million dollar before fleeing on a motorcycle. Authorities are on the lookout for anyone that wants to exchange large amounts of chips at the Bellagio casino.

According to police, the robber got away with casino chips ranging between $ 500 and $ 25,000. If the robber’s wants to redeem the stolen casino gambling chips, he will find that it will not go so easy, the casino chips can in fact only be exchanged in the Bellagio. A spokesman for MGM Resorts, the owner of the Bellagio said: “Casino chips are not the same as cash, at some point they must be redeemed.” Chips are unique to each casino and are generally not interchangeable, although in some exceptions casino companies can change chips with their sister company with a number of limitations. Some casinos use chips with radio frequencies so they can be followed. The spokesman would not say whether the MGM resorts uses such chips. The police will keep an eye on cashiers in case anyone wants to exchange a pile of high value chips.

The robbery resembled something from a Hollywood movie, a man in a tracksuit and a motorcycle helmet with white stripes entered the casino with a gun, robbed the craps table and then fled on a motorcycle in the middle of the night. Police Lieutenant Clinton Nichols said: “The 3:50 a.m. robbery happened about as quick as you can do it.” The police have also released a video of the robber holding a gun while running through the lobby of the casino. The amount of stolen casino chips varies, according to Nichols, the robber got away with nearly $ 2 million. Police also suspects the man of a similar raid on the Las Vegas Suncoast Hotel & Casino poker room on December 9. The robber managed to take $ 20,000 from the poker room of the casino.
