Chad Ellie, a businessman from Las Vegas and one of the 11 persons in the U.S. charged in a crackdown against online gambling, was released on bail after his wife, a former Playboy playmate, paid a part of his bail of $ 250,000.

The 31-year-old Ellie pleaded not guilty to nine charges against him, including violating the UIGEA law (prohibiting the processing of online gambling transactions) and for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud. Ellie was released on a bond of $ 250,000 against $50,000 cash and signature of three people who guarantee to pay the rest of the bond, including his new wife, the former Playboy Playmate Destiny Davis.

Ellie is one of the 11 persons in the charge against the three major online gambling providers PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker by the FBI. According to the charge Ellie is one of the payment processors that processed the transactions of the online poker sites and lied to banks in the U.S. about the origins of the transactions. The authorities accuse Ellie of persuading a bank in Utah to process online gambling transactions in return for an investment of $ 10 million in the bank.

Chad Ellie’s lawyer made a statement today to the press saying: “My client pleads not guilty and intends to aggressively defend himself.” When they asked him why they handed over Ellie’s hard drive to the prosecutor, he answered: “We do not want to waste time with the government.” Ellie could be sentenced to a maximum penalty of 30 years in jail.

Today an MP in Australia reported that he received death threats at his address for his fight against addiction and gambling problems and particularly his idea of required betting limits.

The MP in question is the independent legislator Andrew Wilkie. He has accused the club and bar industry that they are trying to destroy his reputation for his plan to force poker players to sign a registration card that determines how much a person can bet. Wilie is a key member of the fragile coalition government of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and made the poker reform a mayor prerequisite for his support to the coalition and threatened to withdraw if they do nothing with it, making her lose her majority of one seat. Gillard has promised to introduce the new limits in the casino gaming industry before 2014. But the gambling industry has fought back with an advertising battle worth $20.9 million in which they claim the privacy of the gamblers is in jeopardy. Wilke said that since the action he has become the target of threats and intimidation.

Wilkíe said: “n the past two days, Ive received a death threat, been threatened with the existence of compromising photos and am having my past as a cadet at Duntroon (military academy) nearly 30 years ago trawled over. The smear campaign shows that this industry, which profits enormously from human misery, will stop at absolutely nothing to prevent these historic poker machine reforms.” Wilkie came in parliament last year, he reported the threats to the police and added that he has nothing to hide. A spokesman for the bar and club industry said they were shocked by the allegations of Wilkie and he basically has cast the first stone. Approximately 600,000 Australians play online poker every week, about 95,000 of them have a gambling problem.

The U.S. casino gambling industry is not in very good shape, the two largest casinos of Nevada and New Jersey have only reported revenue loss in recent years but casino revenue for March suggest an end to the slump. The casinos in Atlantic City reported a loss of only 1 digit for the second consecutive month.

The 11 casino hotels in the city earned a total of $280.5 million in March with slot machines and table games, a decline of almost 7 percent as compared to the previous year with $300.8 million, according to the New Jersey gaming commission. The results of March follow to the financial results in February when sales fell 1 percent. Before it was customary for Atlantic City to frequently show double-digit losses because the poor economy and competition from casinos in Pennsylvania. One casino director, Don Marrandino is director of Bally’s, Caesars, Harrah’s Resort and Showboat casinos and is motivated by the casino results of March and said the casino gambling industry is slowly gaining ground, after a number of sporting events and festivals in the City helped raise visitor traffic to the restaurants and hotels. He said: “I think we’re stabilizing somewhat in our gaming. Boardwalk Hall was busier than it has ever been. We had the A-10 basketball tournament, wrestling, hockey and the build up to the rodeo. There were three weekends that were booked. Our hotel occupancy was good, as well as our cash business in the hotels and restaurants.”

Atlantic City will keep the focus on projects without gambling during the summer to compensate the action on the casino floor. According to Marrandino local businesses will organize comprehensive firework shows. He said: “I’m very motivated for the summer. Bookings are great. The good news is that we all work together.” Because much of the market emigrated to Pennsylvania, Atlantic City now seen 31 consecutive months of declining revenue starting September 2008. Losses of double digits were quite common during the bad period, which is why Marrandino is so positive about the results for March. He said: “I see these months as a reasonable month, although you’re never satisfied with a loss.”

The Greek government will review a proposed legislation to liberalize the casino market in the country after politicians from the mayor ruling parties had complained that the country would be turned into a big casino.

A month ago the government introduced a bill which could earn the depth ridden country about 700 million Euro through new casino gaming licenses and royalties this year as part of the bailout from the EU and IMF. But MPs from the ruling Socialist Party said the legislation would lead to an abundant supply of casino gambling. MP Dimitris Papoutsis of PASOK said that there were objections that Greece would become one large casino and that the Greek government should not move towards a full liberalization of gambling and casinos, after George Papaconstantinou presented his bill to members of his party. Papaconstantinou told lawmakers that he would withdraw the proposal for further discussion of the legislation.

The casino gambling bill in Greece has undergone several changes since it was submitted in January. Last month the government agreed to a gaming tax of 30% on gross profits instead of the originally proposed 6% after an information session from the advocacy group Remote Gambling Association. The Greek government has also rejected proposed for a ‘black period’ that would prohibit operators from offering Internet gambling games in Greece until the market is open and permits are granted to operators.

Ashley Mitchell, a 29-year-old computer hacker and poker fan, especially on Facebook with Zynga Poker was recently sentenced to two years imprisonment for stealing billions of Zynga virtual poker chips. Mitchell, managed to steal 8.5 million euro worth of casino gambling chips from the popular social network site.

Despite the virtual chips themselves being worth almost nothing, Zynga poker players can buy bundles with poker chips for a certain amount. During the trial, Judge Philip Wassal said that Mitchell has wittingly exploited a security flaw on the servers of the social network site and added: “People are dependent on computer systems. Anyone who knows how to use these systems for their own purposes deserve severe punishment. ”

Besides the prison sentence of 2 years Mitchel was sentenced to 30 days extra imprisonment for violating his probation, which he was imposed after he hacked the computer system of the employees for Torbay Council. Mitchell admitted he has a gambling addiction and that the money he would earn from selling the stolen online poker chips would go to pay his £ 1,000 a day online casino addiction. Mitchell already sold 8.5 million Euro in chips through dummy accounts, earning him around £ 61,000 for his own use.

Several U.S. states are working to adapt their gambling laws to allow online gambling, California introduced a bill to legalize online poker and New Jersey has introduced an online gambling bill. But Florida will probably become the first state with legalized online casinos.

It’s all because of a bill by Joseph Abruzzo which will be discussed by lawmakers in Florida as from March 8. If the bill will be approved, then online gambling could be legalized in the state from July 1. Casino gambling analyst Steve Schwartz said: “It is likely with a $4 billion budget deficit that Florida legislators will approve the online gambling bill. The revenue may be too much to ignore for lawmakers looking to win over public support.” The difficult part for Abruzoo is that his party is a minority in the Legislature of Florida. Conservatives have been against any form of gambling until former Governor Charlie Crist had signed a gambling agreement with the Seminole Indians.

It’s time for the new legislators to legalize gambling via the Internet, despite the ban on online gambling, the United States is the largest online casino gaming industry worldwide. Abruzzo said: “We want to legalize online gambling, regulate and bring revenue to Florida. For me it is common sense to protect our players. “Abruzzo was referring to the majority of the people of Florida already gambling on online poker sites, which are illegal under the U.S. law.

Online gambling is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world and now figures are released that seem to prove this fact. Global Betting and Gaming Consultants says that the global online gaming industry has grown 12% last year.

Global Betting and Gaming Consultants (GBGC) is an information, data and publication service for the global gambling industry, and they have released a report that show the current numbers for the online casino gambling industry. According to the agency, the global online gambling industry is worth over 21.2 billion Euro, up 12% from the previous year and the casino industry expects this amount will continue to rise as more and more jurisdictions are adjusting their laws and regulate online gambling. Steve Schwartz, a gambling analyst at GBGC said: “With the amount of countries that have legalized some form of online gambling, that number will most likely continue to grow over the next decade. If that is the case, the industry could become one of the most relied on in the world when it comes to tax revenue created.”

According to research by the GBGC, the online casino gambling industry will be worth over 29 billion Euro in 2014. As the U.S. adjusts its gambling laws so that online gambling will be permitted that figure will become much higher, because the U.S. market is the largest online gambling market in the world. Of the 21.2 billion Euro what the industry is worth according to the report, 41% of that money comes from sports betting. Online poker and casino sites count for 46% of the amount and online bingo won 943 million Euro last year.

According to reports, the Culture Minister in Norway, Anniken Huitfeldt is looking at what actions can be taken against foreign online gambling casino sites by making the gambling legislation even stricter.

The legislation was amended last year banning financial institutions for processing payments to foreign gambling sites. Since then the number of players gambling on foreign online gambling sites is just as high as before the legislation, causing major concerns among some lawmakers. A survey bu the state gambling monopoly, Norsk Tipping claims that 4% of Norwegians over 18 years currently gambling via foreign online gambling sites. The report that was sent to the Minister of Culture has raised concerns about foreign casino operators and that wile the government is against unregulated online gambling. The report also says that the law clearly has no effect and that the government must take action.

The Norwegian government is probably planning to start taking additional measures, including blocking IP addresses of foreign online gambling sites and legal action against the foreign service providers who accept Norweigian players. The Minister of Culture said: “We want to consider using filtering IP addresses against gambling companies that are undesirable in Norway. Such measures have been successfully used in Italy, Estonia and France, and the concept has found favour in Denmark.” There is opposition to the idea of ISP filtering and claims in the publication the Liberalen say it is not possible for the government to exclude citizens from foreign gambling sites, and that the introduction of ISP filters amounts to censorship of the Internet.

Canada has become one of the largest gambling markets in the world over the last year thanks to the expansion of gambling, the increasing number of casinos and Internet gambling. Now it seems the limit for that expansion has been reached with a new casino complex, which appears to receive a lot of opposition.

The gaming companies PavCo and Paragon Gaming thought they were a sure thing with their casino proposal. The plan is to built a huge casino gambling complex near BC Place in Vancouver with not just a casino, but also an entertainment complex. Despite the grand plans, there is much opposition for the proposal. George Puil, a former Council member in Vancouver said: “Normally I wouldn’t sign a petition to keep the casino facility near BC Place from being built. But I looked at this and thought about it. The location doesn’t appeal to me and I frankly am not in favor of some of the over-development that is going on. The suggestion that we have this huge casino down there just doesn’t appeal to me.” George is not the only one who thinks so. A petition against the proposal was submitted, that gained so much public interest for the discussion, that the subject is postponed untill March 7.

Vancouver, Not Vegas, a group of opponents of the casino proposal, said the delay in the public discussion works in their favour. Sandra Garossino of anti-group said that a few extra weeks might mean more people can get on their list. Sandra said: “Absolutely, there’s no question about it. The public is fully engaged in this now and they want to be heard. We’re just trying to receive it all, and co-ordinate it and get people out to the hearing on Monday, March 7. We’ve just had a flood of inquiries and interest.” The proposed casino gambling complex would have two towers, six restaurants and entertainment venues in addition to a large casino with slot machines, table games and poker rooms.

When the Russian government implemented a law in July 2009 that almost forbids all the gambling in the country, except for four very remote areas, the whole gambling industry understood that the practices would quickly go into illegality and that the government would lose money. We are not even a year away and the problems seem almost impossible to overlook. Across the country, illegal gambling companies were founded that bribe officials to prevent their casino business being exposed. Last week the Russian police received a tip about an illegal casino gambling practice. Investigations were immediately conducted across the country by the department of justice.

A spokeswoman for the Russian Prosecutor-General said that several officials from Moscow will be suspended until the investigation is completed, she said: “During the period of the investigation, prosecutor of Moscow Alexander Mokhov, deputy prosecutor Alexander Ignatenko, and a number of other officers are suspended from their jobs. ”

According to the investigation, the owner of illegal gambling practices Ignatenko and other officials were treated to expensive trips abroad in return for keeping the illegal gambling practices a secret. Three people, including the boss of an illegal casinos, Ivan Nazarov, and five policemen were arrested in the case, and could face up to 10 years in prison if they are found guilty. President Medvedev said: “The laws are the same for everybody. Those who have broken the laws should be punished, regardless of the position they had.” The number of illegal casinos, gambling halls and bingo rooms has increased significantly since the casino ban was introduced in 2009, the number of Russian players in online casinos is also increasing.
