Betfair possibly leaving UK
The United Kingdom has been for many years one of the best locations for online casino and Internet gambling operators, the operators pay a high price for it however, a high price which is one of the highest tax rates in the world. This has led to the exodus of some of the biggest casino companies in the world.
Last year, the gambling taxes in the UK went up, after which casino gambling companies fled the country to find cheaper tax jurisdictions. Two of the biggest casino companies, William Hill and Ladbrokes were the first companies that looked for salvation in the tax haven Gibraltar. Betfair is now the third major company that is considering the same measure. David Yu, CEO of Betfair said in the Sunday Telegraph that he intends to leave with his gambling casino business if the tax rates are not relaxed. He used clear words to bring his point across.
David Yu said: “We’re happy to be licensed and to pay sensible tax, but if we don’t see movement we’d have to consider what’s right for the business over the long term. We’ve been very, very proud to be a British business and I think we’re one of the real UK success stories.” Betfair has had talks with the government to keep the casino gaming company in the country, but the government would have to make major concession to keep the company.
Where Betfair will eventually move, depends on where the tax is most advantageous for the internet gambling business.
