Barney Frank at WSOP

July 7th, 2009

At the World Series of Poker, Barney Frank who was the guest of honour, told poker players that he still believes his bill which will regulate internet gambling will be passed by the end of the year.

Frank said delays caused by recession legislation should not prevent the anti-UIGEA law from being addressed this fall. When Frank told online gambling is a freedom that should be protected, the poker players applauded. Barney Frank said that the UIGEA which which is behind the online gambling ban is “stupid,” and promised to continue to lead the fight to overturn it. Frank also addressed the conservatives in Congress whose own personal lives have been exposed for lack of character, telling them sarcastically that they need to stop telling the rest of the country to meet the high standards they set. The bills Frank has authored, which will regulate internet gambling and repeal the UIGEA, will philosophically split Republicans into two groups, the Christian conservatives who seek to control lifestyle of the rest of the country, and libertarians desiring smaller government and less intrusion into everyday life. Frank said: “What individuals choose to do online is none of the government’s business,” and urged that players write their Congressmen and Senators to support the bill, making sure their voices are heard.
