The Taiwan Premier, Wu Den-yih ordered an investigation into baseball match-fixing so that the island’s national sport can develop in a healthy way. Three of the four teams in the Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) are supposedly involved in mafia controlled match fixing.
The Premiers order on Tuesday follows one day after prosecutors searched the houses of six players of the Elephant Brothers, one of the four teams of the CPBL. On Monday night, 11 players were questioned by prosecutors over the alleged game fixing. Six players were confined and five player left on Tuesday morning after paying bail. On Tuesday three other players were also interrogated. Nine others are going to be interrogated on Wednesday, including former Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tsao Chin-hui. Reports say the game-fixing started in May, with mobsters paying a league player as much as 30,000 to 3 million Taiwan dollars (55,000 UK pounds) to throw a match. Cheng Hsin-hua one of the prosecutors said they will respect evidence and follow legal procedures in handling the casino gambling case. Cheng said: “We have ruled out that the players were intimidated and forced into throwing games,” which could mean that if players were involved in the gambling scam, they willingly and knowingly cooperated with the mobsters. CPBL guidelines say if a players is guilty of match-fixing, or if he has been questioned and released on bail, he will be fired and will be banned from playing baseball forever. Taiwan’s baseball has been tainted by game-fixing and online gambling scandals in the last couple of years. Baseball is Taiwan’s national sport, the bad results in international matches in recent years by the national teams have cast a shadow of doubt on the future of the nation’s baseball.

In the beginning of next year France will change its gambling policy’s on online gambling, as online casino operators try to secure a place in the opening gambling market, France officials warn online gambling and gambling advertisement rules have not yet changed.
An article in the French newspaper the Metro, by online gambling company Zeturf has attracted attention of French officials, who see the articles placed by the internet betting company as unauthorised advertisement, which could have consequences for future licenses of the gambling company. The full page in the Metro bought by Zeturf featured the Prix del’Arc de Triomphe horse race, and noted better pay-outs and odds at Zeturf’s. The online betting company claims it is just a press release, but Budget Minister, Eric Woerth said its obscured advertisement. France has made plans to open up its online gambling market and supply licenses to European competitors in the beginning of 2010. Online casinos are jumping to get a piece of the French gambling pie. The opening of the French online gambling market is expected to be the biggest in Europe. Woerth and his colleagues have been unyielding and denies any provider with a head start. Legislation against gambling advertisements will be carried out thoroughly, and provider who choose to ignore the rules will be remembered when it is time for licensing hearings. Woerth cited several gambling companies which attempted to make a move in the gambling market before the appropriate time.

Five Accrington Stanley players lost their appeal against the penalties imposed on them, for betting on soccer matches on Thursday. Peter Cavanagh, James Harris, David Mannix, Robert Williams and Andrew Mangan brought the appeals. The players, except Harris, appealed against the guilty ruling by a regulatory commission in July, and against the sanctions imposed by the Commission.
All appeals were dismissed by the judge, except on the issue of costs. Three of the players wagered thousands of pounds for their team, Accrington Stanley, to lose against Bury in may 2008, they did with 2-0. Harris was banned for one year and fined a total of £5500, Mannix got a 10 months ban from playing and was imposed with a fine of £4000 and Williams was suspended for eight months and fined £3500. Mangan, who was a Bury player at the time, was banned for five months and fined £2000 for betting on his team to win. Cavanagh was suspended from soccer for eight months and fined £3500. Costs were reduced from 5000 pounds to 1000 pounds in each case except for Cavanagh’s. His costs include obtaining expert evidence andreduced from £9626.45 to £2,000. Appeal Board Chairman Paul Gilroy, QC, said: “He appeal board was unanimous in dismissing all appeals against findings of guilt and sanction. Whilst there were points of factual distinction as between the five players concerned, all five were rightly convicted of serious breaches of FA rules and the appeal board could see no merit in disturbing the regulatory commission’s findings as to sanction. The appeal board was nevertheless satisfied that as a result of those findings, in addition to the orders made by the commission in relation to costs, each of the five players faced a cumulative financial penalty which was, in all the circumstances, disproportionate.”
