Last week the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced that it ordered Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) to block 200 online casino sites, in order to ban online gambling, they used the Federal Wire Act to do so. Today representative Pat Garofalo introduced a bill to the legislature that would prevent the DPS from blocking the sites.

Garofalo said: “The DPS has to have better things to do with their time than to go after a college kid in his dorm room or some guy sitting in his basement spending a couple of hours playing online poker.” The action had a lot of comment from all sections of the economy. The letter which was sent to the ISP’s threatened the ISP’s with penaltys from the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) if they did not comply. But the FCC itself says it has no regulatory authority over the Internet. Garofalo final comment was: “Demanding that a private-sector Internet service provider block access to casino websites is not a proper function of our state government.” Gambling legislation is expected to change any time, with this new bill it pushes the UIGEA further in a corner and create more freedom for online casinos.

A while back, Kentucky has tried to block access to online gambling sites by taking 141 online domain names, Minnesota is trying to accomplish the same thing, only they have taken different steps toward keeping residents from gamble online.

Minnesota ordered eleven internet and phone service providers to block some 200 websites that are used for online gambling. Ironically, the regulators are not using the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) to put a stop to online casino gambling. Instead, they point to a 1961 federal law that was created to put a stop to illegal gambling. They also warned anyone who gambles online at an online casino, that the possibility exists, that they can lose access to their account. The action comes at a strange time, in 2 weeks time, Barney Frank will introduce legislation to overthrow the UIGEA.
