American and Jamaican authorities formally announced a newly created joint task force in an effort to break up lottery scams based on the Caribbean island. The Jamaican Operations Linked to Telemarketing (JOLT) task force, which was already in the pipeline begining of 2008.

Americans lost a total of more then 30 million dollar last year, when large numbers of murders where linked to the gambling scheme. Assistant police commissioner Leslie Green said in a press conference, that the primary goal of the task force is to seize assets from the gambling scheme rings that are based in St. James. The task force includes agents from the Customs Enforcement agency and U.S. Immigration as well as Jamaican personnel, including 15 police investigators. The task force will also focus on the recovery of funds, and return it to the victims.
